What’s the Difference between an Estate Sale and a Garage Sale?

Estate Sales / July 2, 2019

For the avid bargain hunter, sales are all the same. Whether it’s a yard sale, estate sale, tag sale or garage sale – it’s a place where you can find great second-hand goods, often at very reasonable prices.

There are, however, a few key differences between garage sales and estate sales:

A Garage Sale

  • A garage sale is usually held in a person’s garage, driveway or on their lawn. The sale is held to purge their home of items they no longer want and need. Some of the items that you can expect to find at garage sales include cutlery, appliances, children’s toys, sporting equipment, and old furniture.
  • Garage sales are usually conducted by the owner of the property.

An Estate Sale

  • An estate sale is held after someone has passed away, or after a home has been foreclosed or abandoned. Many times, the estate sale is initiated by family members of the person who passed away.
  • The items that you will find at an estate sale are quite often of much better quality than what you would find at a yard sale or garage sale. More often than not, all the items in the home are on sale, which means you can get anything from televisions and electronics to clothes, antiques, art, and a variety of furniture.
  • When you arrive at an estate sale, the items will be marked, but it is possible that some items will be unmarked. In this case, feel free to make an offer on a product. Remember that negotiation is a two-way street, so offer what you think is a fair price and see if your offer gets accepted.
  • Estate sales typically run over a few days, and are well advertised in advance.
  • Professional estate sale experts are called in for estate sales. Hiring someone to manage your estate sale for you is the best way to make sure you get a good price on items. They also manage everything from cleaning and displaying items to managing the income that is generated from sales.
